Mickey and Ariel

Mickey & Ariel were adopted together earlier today.
The family was great and I'm really excited.

Now, just Jasmine is left. Come meet her!

Sporty Spice

Sporty Spice was adopted last night before closing. The family was in earlier yesterday morning and fell in love with her. They said they would be back in the afternoon after preparing everything. They were a family of four. Two younger sons, mom, and dad. It seemed like a perfect fit and I'm really excited.

Posh Spice and Baby Spice will be available shortly after their spay appointments in January.

Ginger Spice and Snowflake

Ginger Spice was adopted right as we opened this morning to a couple who had been in a few times last week and finally made their decision. They said that Ginger looked like a mix of two cats they'd had before which is why they fell so quickly in love with her!

Then, just now Snowflake was adopted out to a great family. She will be loving with two kids, mom, dad, and 2 dogs! I'm so excited for her because the family seemed really really great!

Friday, December 25, 2009

Buffy

Buffy was adopted early yesterday morning. We are all so glad she is home for the holidays.

Just a reminder we are closed tomorrow, and will reopen Tuesday. Then we close again the 31st and the 1st. Normal hours return January 2.

Bronx and Soho & Xander

Bronx and Soho were adopted together this afternoon! They are going to a great couple and I am so excited.

Also, Xander is being adopted RIGHT NOW! YAY! I'm so excited because I adore him!

Jet, Bronco, Milk, and Eric

All four of these loving cats were adopted yesterday for the holiday season! All went to seperate but great homes.
Jet was a little brown and white long hair tabby from the "NFL's".
Bronco was a grey and white guy also from the "NFL's". There are still 2 "NFL's" left; Raiderette and Steeler who will available shortly after they have been spayed and nuetered.
Milk was a grey and white cat as well who only cared about love and being somebody's best friend.
Lastly, was Eric. Eric was an orange tabby from the oh so loving group, the "Disney's". Eric was the sixth "Disney" to be adopted after Charming, Cinderella, Aladdin, Disney, Belle. Ariel, Jasmine, and Mickey remain available for adoption; and mom, Queenie, should be available sometime in the new year!

Congrats to all these guys and hopefully we will have another great day!

Dolly, Barbie, and Stolie

Dolly and Barbie were adopted yesterday together! The family is really great and I am so excited they are together. They originally came from the Fairmont Animal Shelter, and went directly into foster until this past Monday. They were only in Kitty City for 4 days before being swooped up!

And secondly, Stolie was adopted today to the same family who adopted Patron. Now Jager is the only one left! She's a sweetie!

Rosalita, Hermione and Ron

Rosalita was officially adopted yesterday afternoon by her foster mom. I got a chance to say goodbye before she left, and I am so glad, because she is a doll :)

Hermione and Ron were adopted out together yesterday afternoon as well. The nice lady who took Draco wanted to have the family together so she came in and fell in love. She told me how great Draco was doing, and how amazing she is to have him. I'm happy for this little family to be so together!

Thursday, December 10, 2009

Belle

Belle was adopted this afternoon.
The family was amazing; they adopted sweet little Okapi last year and he was starting to get lonely. As I spoke to them, I found out they had a dog as well. They weren't sure if they wanted a cat or a kitten. Originally, they had their minds on Victoria, but upon walking into Kitty City, their minds changed. I recommended Xander to them, as he would be a great playmate. They fell in love with him almost immediately, but all of a sudden Belle jumped into the little boy's lap and started purring. They pondered for about an hour and ended up choosing Belle; but I believe, they didn't choose her- she chose them.

Charming and Disney

Charming and Disney were adopted early yesterday morning to one of our volunteers. Their new names are Trooper and Mr. Buddy. I'm so happy to see them go together. Their new parents are saying that they are doing very very well and they are thrilled to hang out with them more.

Friday October 30th was a big day at VHS!

First, we had our annual Halloween party! It was a blast! We had a costume competition and our winners were: Harry (a pet therapy dog) dressed as a bumble bee for funniest, Amanda dressed as a peacock for most original, and Amy dressed as a "cereal" killer for scariest! It was so much fun :)

Then, our calendars ARRIVED! That's right everyone, they are in the shelter! Pick yours up now if you preordered, or come buy one! They look really swell :)

And lastly, Vista of the V's was adopted to a nice couple.

Farrah is our pet of the week.

Saturday Update

It's a quiet day at the shelter. We had a new volunteer orientation this AM which was fun, and ever since it's been pretty mellow!
Harry Potter is on hold to go home Tuesday morning. The man can't wait to take home little Harry; I'm excited the first of the Harry Potters are going home. Hopefully they'll all follow and go home quickly as well.

A man came in who was missing one of his cats; he takes care of the feral cats that live near his home. The cat is a dark/smokey grey and has been missing for 20 days. It's a neutered male and was last seen around Bernal. If you've seen it or know anybody who has, call animal control to have them take it to ECAS because the man is continually checking ECAS to see if his cat is there. He seemed pretty distraught, I hope the cat shows up soon.

Our calendar contest voting is going fabulous, we're not up to 5000 yet, but it's definetely not the end of the day yet! There's a lot of campaign posters up, I recommend coming down to the shelter and checking it out!

Calendar contest update #9 will be posted later tonight!

All the kitties say hello and would like for you to come down and visit; hope to see you soon!

Esme went home today.
She was so happy and seemed to get along great with the family. We are all so happy for her that she has found her forever home.
Esme was, well..she still is, an amazing cat that I will really miss! It was so cool how you could just open up her cage and she would automatically start purring. I will definetely miss that, but there are plenty of sweet cats to go around!

Congratulations Esme!

Janet and Soda

Janet, the last of the Three's Company kittens, was adopted today! They were all such sweet kittens and I'm glad to see them go home.

Then, our very own Nat took Soda home. As most of us may know, Soda is a bit feral; so, Nat took Soda home with her to live in her backyard as a garden cat. Soda is safe for now in Nat's outdoor cattery. Once she is adjusted, Soda will be let be more freely in her yard!

We still have a ton of cats up for adoption, come on down to meet everyone!

Critter Camp 2009

Critter Camp is going strong, and the kids are having a ton of fun! Posted above is a picture of Brittany H's Vietnamese Pig, Bucca.

"Critter Camp is a great day camp for kids. They spend one week learing about what it takes to be a responsible pet owner. During this week Wendy takes the Campers to various animal agencies in the area and [one day] they even got to meet a pet pig!"

VHS Update

I got this email from Nat today;

"Today- Scnoodle Murphy adopted, also kittens Loisse and Chrissy .Sanchez the dog that we sent to Shih Tzu rescue was groomed the day off transfer, at that time they found that he was severly matted to the point where he has some bleeding, the next day he was neutered. He then met with a past adopter from 6 years ago and the person and past Shih Tzu that they had adopted got along well with him so it looks like he will be adopted by them! Yay for Sanchez!"

And this email from Thomas;

"The family that adopted Murphy are from Hawaii. She's a nurse at Stanford, (has a little girl and a cocker spaniel) here for a year and drove to Cupertino and back to get her other dog to make sure he got along with Murphy. [And] he did."

Chrissy got adopted by a single woman who [was] very nice and fell right in love with Chrissy

Louise got adopted by a single guy who just thought Louise was the coolest cat ever."

Yay for three great adoptions on Saturday!

Sanchez

This is Sanchez. Sanchez is a two year old Shih Tzi who's owner has terminal cancer. Valley Humane Society Volunteer Shoshannah Reed and her daughter Sophia made arrangements for Sanchez to be transferred into the care of Shih Tzi Rescue located in San Jose. Shoshannah picked up Sanchez at his old home and will be dropping him off with a Breed rescue Volunteer. If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting this furry little guy please contact them at 408-266-1221 408-266-1221 . Sanchez has very matted fur and these folks at Shih Tzi rescue will know just how to clean Sanchez up.

Hong Kong Dog Rescue

Hi all!
As most of you may know, I am in Hong Kong for the week and today I got to go to the Hong Kong Dog Rescue on the big island.
It was a long drive to it, but it was totally worth it.
I only have two pictures, and they're of the front of the building, which I'll upload when I get home.

Hong Kong Dog Rescue is a no-kill organization that houses dogs until they find homes.
All the dogs looked very healthy, and were very happy. It was a mostly outdoor facility but they are in the process of remodeling as we speak.

HKDR has 7 full time employees (their dog trainer is from San Francisco!), and about 150-200 dedicated volunteers who mainly take care of walking the dogs, but also have a big whiteboard they can write anything weird they notice about the dogs on. The dogs also have their own little forest-y area to run around and play.

The facility is split into two sides, one for the more playful dogs and one for the slightly "aggressive" dogs. But, the man I talked to says they rarely see this. During the day, all the dogs healthy enough to come out and play are allowed too. And there is a bathing schedule for everyone as well.

I'm sure you're wondering by now...how many dogs are there??
Well...there's 200! No joke!
They also have several smaller dogs in foster programs because they cannot handle the stress of the barking of the other dogs in the shelter.

If you'd like to learn more, the website is www.hongkongdogrescue.com or you can email me at vhs_animalcare_assistant@yahoo.com

I'm glad I got to learn about this organization, and I am so glad that these dogs will find their forever homes. Last week, they had 6 adoptions, and they are trying to up these numbers all the times.

Thanks!

Lotsa Adoptions!

On Sunday, Lady Liberty was adopted to a nice family. Patriot, her brother, is still looking for a home. He is a sweetheart too!

Then, on Monday, our lovely Leah was adopted. Yup, Leah! It was great. She went home with a newlywed couple excited about having a first cat. They are extra friendly and Leah was so happy while doing the adoption. She purred and purred and kept jumping on the fellow's lap for some love. :)

And, then today, Dr.Pepper was adopted! It was wonderful! She went home with a great new family and she is going to be so happy!

Saturday, July 25, 2009

I spoke too soon!

About an hour after that last post, three cats went home...TOGETHER! Yup, that's right. Together! Mountain Dew, Showgirl, and Lady Luck were all adopted. This amazing family also has put Roulette on hold until she gets better.

Mercedes

Mercedes went to heaven this morning. She was having exploratory surgery this morning to figure out some answers as to why she has had a fever and some other things for a very long time; and they found a big mass in her abdomen. She was very unhealthy but fortunately she had an amazing life here at VHS because of all the love volunteers and staff members gave her everyday.
I will miss her a lot and I'm sure many of you will too.
We love you Mercedes and you are in a happier place now where you won't be in pain anymore, and you'll be reunited with your babies Ferrari and Cooper.

"My husband, Randy, and I adopted a cat named, Baxter, back in January. Just wanted to let you know that he is doing very well! We love him to pieces and are having so much fun with him! He is very cuddly but also playful."

She sent me some pictures which I will post to the photobucket account soon (They are also posted in this blog :]). They'll be posted under the 'Adopted Kitties' section.

Autumn and Cocoa

Autumn and Cocoa were both adopted yesterday.
Here's what Nat says, "Autumn actually went home with the fellow who originally brought her to us. She was a stray in his yard....and he couldn't leave her here any longer. It's the best solution for her :) [And,] Cocoa went with a man and woman, no kids. But they have two 7 year old cats and an old German Shepherd. He said he is going to fatten her up :)"

Dove is the only 'Chocolates' kitten left. He is EXTREMELY sweet and needs a home fast since he is very lonely without any litter mates or his momma anymore. Come down to the shelter to meet him and a plethora of other cats and kittens waiting for your love.

Fanta was one of the Soda babies who was born on the car ride down to VHS from Kings County on April 12, 2009. His life may have started out a little rocky, but he's definetely going to be one happy little guy with a new family and a new best friend now. :)

Hot Weather Tips

The ASPCA Website has a great article on how to keep your pets safe in the summer heat. Summer starts on June 21 which is only about 10 days away!

I have cut and pasted the article below, but here is also the URL:

Hot Weather Tips

In summertime, the living isn’t always easy for our animal friends. Dogs and cats can suffer from the same problems that humans do, such as overheating, dehydration and even sunburn. By taking some simple precautions, you can celebrate the season and keep your pets happy and healthy.
- A visit to the veterinarian for a spring or early summer check-up is a must; add to that a test for heartworm, if your dog isn't on year-round preventive medication. Do parasites bug your animal companions? Ask your doctor to recommend a safe, effective flea and tick control program.
- Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle—hyperthermia can be fatal. Even with the windows open, a parked automobile can quickly become a furnace in no time. Parking in the shade offers little protection, as the sun shifts during the day.
- Always carry a gallon thermos filled with cold, fresh water when traveling with your pet.
- The right time for playtime is in the cool of the early morning or evening, but never after a meal or when the weather is humid.
- Street smarts: When the temperature is very high, don’t let your dog stand on hot asphalt. His or her body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum.- A day at the beach is a no-no, unless you can guarantee a shaded spot and plenty of fresh water for your companion. Salty dogs should be rinsed off after a dip in the ocean.- Provide fresh water and plenty of shade for animals kept outdoors; a properly constructed doghouse serves best. Bring your dog or cat inside during the heat of the day to rest in a cool part of the house.- Be especially sensitive to older and overweight animals in hot weather. Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dogs such as bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers, Lhasa apsos and shih tzus, as well as those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.- When walking your dog, steer clear of areas that you suspect have been sprayed with insecticides or other chemicals. And please be alert for coolant or other automotive fluid leaking from your vehicle. Animals are attracted to the sweet taste, and ingesting just a small amount can be fatal. Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 if you suspect that your animal has been poisoned. - Good grooming can stave off summer skin problems, especially for dogs with heavy coats. Shaving the hair to a one-inch length—never down to the skin, please, which robs Rover of protection from the sun—helps prevent overheating. Cats should be brushed often.- Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.- Having a backyard barbecue? Always keep matches, lighter fluid, citronella candles and insect coils out of pets' reach.
- Please make sure that there are no open, unscreened windows or doors in your home through which animals can fall or jump.- Stay alert for signs of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting and drooling and mild weakness, along with an elevated body temperature.

Water Safety
For a lot of families, summertime means swimming time. If your pooch will be joining you on your adventures, be it lakeside, oceanside or poolside, please read our following tips:
- Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool.
- Not all dogs are good swimmers, so if water sports are a big part of your family, please introduce your pets to water gradually.
- Make sure all pets wear flotation devices on boats.
- Try not to let your dog drink pool water, which contains chlorine and other chemicals that could cause GI upset.

Ramsey

Ramsey, our beautiful Blue-Point Siamese is going home Thursday! :)
Congrats Ramsey!

Today!

Today was a great day! The Wiggle Waggle Dog Wash brought in a load of money for our cats and dogs! Yay! :) "About 50-60 dogs came," volunteer Theresa tells me. It was one heck of time out there. Tyson, a puggle adopted from us in February stopped by! I met some gorgeous yellow labs who I wanted to take home! They were so cute. Lots of people came in and dropped off clean laundry, and some donations. We also had a small tour which was hectic, but the kitties sure did get a lot of attention. It was one busy busy busy day!

If you weren't around today because you have a cat, and not a dog, here are some cat bathing tips I found online at "http://animals.howstuffworks.com/pets/how-to-care-for-a-cat6.htm"
I just copied the main headings-to learn more, please go to the website listed above! :)

1. Be prepared
2. Ready your bathing station
3. Start the suds
4. Dry

Enjoy! But, as a heads up, it also states on the site that it's not exactly necessary to bathe a cat, so don't feel like you have too! Thanks :)

Have a fabulous rest of the weekend!

Lizzie

Lizzie was adopted today by Vicki Ziegler and her husband! Her husband gave it to her as a gift for their Wedding Anniversary.
Lizzie will be living with former VHS Cat Nahla!

Bobby Update!

Here are two lovely Bobby updates from his new home. These were sent to me by Natalie!

"Fiver is crazy, but doing very well. He’s chowing down like a pro, racing all over the house and investigating everything. Haven’t let him and Chubs together without supervision but when they have hung out it has gone really well, better than I could have imagined. He just gives her a wide berth unless something really interesting gets his attention…then if he gets too close she gives him just a bit of a hiss and puts a paw up. But no growling, stare downs, puffed tails or anything like that. He respects her authority! She is mildly interested in, and she’ll watch him and go over to sniff him sometimes but mostly just ignores him.

He is so active, I forgot what its like to have a young’un in the house. He climbs the whole scratching post without using the steps, just scaling the post with his claws. Runs himself silly up and down and up and down the hallway, and he has started mewing more. He cracks us up. Very cute, and seems to have adjusted really well. There is only one negative thing I can say about him…he has the smelliest poops of any cat I’ve ever known!! I bought a few rolls of those little doggie poop bags you get for walking your dog because I have to scoop the box instantly as soon as he goes. It never dissipates; it stays as strong as when it was laid down for hours! How can such a smell come out of such a small sweet cat?

We are starting to try and teach him the ways of the household, like evening TV watching lap time and morning cuddle time…he is so busy all the time that he doesn’t really get around to the laying down cuddling thing too well yet but we’re working on him. He just has so much to see when we let him out of his room that he can hardly contain himself!"

Here is the second one:
"No, thanks those are such great pictures! He is tough to take pictures of since he’s all black and never sits still for one second J Oh, by the way – I weighed him today and he is 5 pounds FIVE ounces. Truly a “Fiver” now. Can you believe that? He’s gained 4 ounces since he left you guys. Fat bellied cat!!!

A hui hou,
Jenine

Everybody here is now so happy for you Fiver!

Sunday afternoon Kitty update

Everybody is doing fabulous this afternoon. Julie jumped out of her cage a little bit ago and is now sniffing around and checking out everything in Kitty City. Jake is out playing with a toy mouse and Lisa is stalking a water bowl...really, I'm not kidding. She slammed her paw down in the bowl too, I'm not sure what she was thinking, and made a huge mess of water. She then ran into the back room. Haha, silly girl. Also, Noodle is doing well after her spay surgery yesterday.
Liz, our Animal Care Associate let Autumn roam around the front room today and boy was Autumn a happy gal when I came in this afternoon. She was even smiling a bit. :) She must have been playing a lot because there were toy mice everywhere and when I put her in her cage, she curled up in her bed and fell straight to sleep, still smiling.
It's lonely without the exuberant kittens running around all over the place!
Everybody in Purple and Red are happy and purring away today as well. :)
Wanda says hello and told me to say that she wishes everybody enjoys the rest of their weekend and can't wait to see you all again Tuesday!

Saturday, May 30, 2009

Jerry and Paula

Jerry went home! He is now living in Campbell with a young couple as well. It was love at first sight for the three happy new family members.
Paula was also just placed on hold for a family of 4 with a doggie. They are thinking it over this weekend to determine if Paula would be the right fit for their Golden Retriever. Paula loved the family and they hung out together for about 30 minutes today. The mom says that it might be fate because the last two cats they've had both had kinked tails, and so does Paula! They are still not certain, and will let us know Tuesday whether Paula is right for their family or not! :)

Ben

Ben also was adopted today! He went home with a young couple. He will also be living with a dog. Congrats Ben!

Janis

Janis, the last of the Rockstars, was adopted this afternoon. She will be living with a nice family. A mom, dad, a daughter whose a senior in high school, and another black kitty named Baxter. Janis' new parents say that Baxter looks like Jake. Janis was so fiesty today while her new parents were bonding with her, really letting them get to know her true personality. Baxter is 3 and as playful as she is. They were both so excited that he will finally have a companion. :)

Talulah and Cayce Mae update

I just got word from Sharon (Talulah's foster mom) that Talulah is doing amazingly well! She is purring, laying on the whole families lap, sleeping on their bed, and just having a fabulous time. She is not so fond of Pie (the foster family's younger cat) but Sharon is working on that. I am so happy for you Talulah!

Also, Cayce Mae is in a great mood today. I had her in the work room for about 20 minutes, and she was purring away, she is so very happy. Right now she is relaxing in Nat's office. I'm glad to see her looking up! :)

Robin

Robin was adopted today! He went home to a family with a Mom, Dad, and two daughters. One daughter is attending college elsewhere, but will probably be home frequently to visit little Robin.
This family's 16 year old kitty had just passed away a few months ago, so this was a big step for Mom, but everything seemed to go well reports Nat.
We are all so happy for Robin!

Talulah

Our beautiful Talulah went into foster yesterday with one of our volunteers. We all hope Talulah enjoys the vacation and we will miss her!

Bobby

Our little Bobby has just landed in Portland, Oregon! He was adopted yesterday by Nat's best friend Jenine. He will be living with another kitty named Chubbers, and Jenine and her husband! We are all so happy for you Bobby!

Also, the nice couple who put Jake on hold found a kitten this weekend so Jake is not on hold anymore, but he is now in Kitty City waiting for some loving! Go visit him in the all the way bottom left cage in the back room, he's a lonely fellow right now waiting for you to come give him attention :)

The Birds

The rest of our beautiful 'Birds' went home this afternoon. Cardinal, Finch, and Oriole were all adopted into the same family, yay! Cardinal will be moving to LA though, while Finch and Oriole stay in Danville. Finch and Oriole will be living with a 14 cat year kitty with Diabetes, and a very loving family.
Cardinal will be moving into a home with a doggy and I believe another kitty!
Yay for the Birds!

Also, the Cullens went back into foster tonight for a little TLC and to start feeling better before coming back to the shelter for adoption!

Successful Saturday!

Hi everybody!
Today was amazing day at the shelter! Sparrow and Raven both went to an awesome home, as did Pigeon! Oriole and Cardinal are both going to a home tomorrow as well. Bobby is in foster to adopt! Yay! And- Jake is on hold to go home sometime next week, once he has been vaccinated and examined by Pam to make sure everything is A-OK! :)

Pigeon

Pigeon was just adopted into a lovely home. The lady who adopted her made sure she was the right kitten for her by visiting three other shelters in the area (Hayward, Fremont, Dublin) before taking Pigeon.

Pigeon is one lucky kitten!

Raven & Sparrow

I'm very happy to announce that Raven and Sparrow just went home! A nice couple with two older Siamese cats already proudly adopted Raven and Sparrow excited for them to join their home!
