Rusty Update

Rusty has been doing absolutely fabulous in his new home! Here is an email update from his new owner:

"We are very happy with rusty he is such a good cat hes like family. Its funny some of the things he does like in the morning hes our alarm clock he will come and bump his head into us till we wake up. He also loves whipped cream sometimes if we get out the whipped cream and hes in the next room he will run over and start meowing alot, also when hes really happy he makes this really really loud purring noise its really cute. Also it was funny last night me and my mom had seen a spider yesterday and rusty kept hitting it with his paw and the spider moved towards him n he jumped like a foot in the air. Right now he look like a little baby sleeping next to me."

Pictures!

Hey everybody! Are you missing seeing your favorite kitty?! I just set up a 'Photobucket' account with a whole bunch of VHS pictures in it! I'm adding old and new so that we will always remember the kitties who have already been adopted, and in between the days you hang out at the shelter, you can go to this site just to look at all the babies :)
If you want to add any pics, please email me at vhs_animalcare_assistant@yahoo.com, and I will upload the pic for you, you can also add a description to the pic if you'd like.
The link is here, http://photobucket.com/VHSpictures and I will also put it on the links section on the upper right hand side.
To view it, click the link and all the cats at VHS now (or in foster) will be posted; to view the adopted animals, click on the 'Adopted Kitties' link!

Enjoy!

Macaroni

Sorry for the late update, but Macaroni was adopted on Wednesday! Macaroni was the 3rd kitten of the 'Pastas' to find a home. There are still two left, Tortellini and Ravioli. Mom, Noodle, is also looking for a forever home; maybe she could go with one of her babies?

Fanta

Fanta went home today. He is now living with Batman! The lady wanted Batman to have a friend since he seemed lonely, and Fanta seemed to fill that position of companion quite nicely.
Fanta was one of the Soda babies who was born on the car ride down to VHS from Kings County on April 12, 2009. His life may have started out a little rocky, but he's definetely going to be one happy little guy with a new family and a new best friend now. :)

Vegas & Lil' Red

Vegas was adopted today to a great family of five. Four humans (Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister) and a canine companion! The family made their decision wisely as this was their third visit before decision. Originally they had looked at Paula but they chose Vegas because they thought he would fit better with their lifestyle. Congrats Vegas!

Also, with some sad news our sweet Lil' Red has gone to heaven today. Thank you everybody for all the love you gave him on his time on Earth. Now he has unlimited mice to chase and pals to play with. We love you and will miss you Lil' Red.

Hot Weather Tips

The ASPCA Website has a great article on how to keep your pets safe in the summer heat. Summer starts on June 21 which is only about 10 days away!

I have cut and pasted the article below, but here is also the URL:

Hot Weather Tips

In summertime, the living isn’t always easy for our animal friends. Dogs and cats can suffer from the same problems that humans do, such as overheating, dehydration and even sunburn. By taking some simple precautions, you can celebrate the season and keep your pets happy and healthy.
- A visit to the veterinarian for a spring or early summer check-up is a must; add to that a test for heartworm, if your dog isn't on year-round preventive medication. Do parasites bug your animal companions? Ask your doctor to recommend a safe, effective flea and tick control program.
- Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle—hyperthermia can be fatal. Even with the windows open, a parked automobile can quickly become a furnace in no time. Parking in the shade offers little protection, as the sun shifts during the day.
- Always carry a gallon thermos filled with cold, fresh water when traveling with your pet.
- The right time for playtime is in the cool of the early morning or evening, but never after a meal or when the weather is humid.
- Street smarts: When the temperature is very high, don’t let your dog stand on hot asphalt. His or her body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum.- A day at the beach is a no-no, unless you can guarantee a shaded spot and plenty of fresh water for your companion. Salty dogs should be rinsed off after a dip in the ocean.- Provide fresh water and plenty of shade for animals kept outdoors; a properly constructed doghouse serves best. Bring your dog or cat inside during the heat of the day to rest in a cool part of the house.- Be especially sensitive to older and overweight animals in hot weather. Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dogs such as bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers, Lhasa apsos and shih tzus, as well as those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.- When walking your dog, steer clear of areas that you suspect have been sprayed with insecticides or other chemicals. And please be alert for coolant or other automotive fluid leaking from your vehicle. Animals are attracted to the sweet taste, and ingesting just a small amount can be fatal. Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 if you suspect that your animal has been poisoned. - Good grooming can stave off summer skin problems, especially for dogs with heavy coats. Shaving the hair to a one-inch length—never down to the skin, please, which robs Rover of protection from the sun—helps prevent overheating. Cats should be brushed often.- Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.- Having a backyard barbecue? Always keep matches, lighter fluid, citronella candles and insect coils out of pets' reach.
- Please make sure that there are no open, unscreened windows or doors in your home through which animals can fall or jump.- Stay alert for signs of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting and drooling and mild weakness, along with an elevated body temperature.

Water Safety
For a lot of families, summertime means swimming time. If your pooch will be joining you on your adventures, be it lakeside, oceanside or poolside, please read our following tips:
- Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool.
- Not all dogs are good swimmers, so if water sports are a big part of your family, please introduce your pets to water gradually.
- Make sure all pets wear flotation devices on boats.
- Try not to let your dog drink pool water, which contains chlorine and other chemicals that could cause GI upset.

Ramsey

Ramsey, our beautiful Blue-Point Siamese is going home Thursday! :)

Today!

Today was a great day! The Wiggle Waggle Dog Wash brought in a load of money for our cats and dogs! Yay! :) "About 50-60 dogs came," volunteer Theresa tells me. It was one heck of time out there. Tyson, a puggle adopted from us in February stopped by! I met some gorgeous yellow labs who I wanted to take home! They were so cute. Lots of people came in and dropped off clean laundry, and some donations. We also had a small tour which was hectic, but the kitties sure did get a lot of attention. It was one busy busy busy day!

If you weren't around today because you have a cat, and not a dog, here are some cat bathing tips I found online at "http://animals.howstuffworks.com/pets/how-to-care-for-a-cat6.htm"
I just copied the main headings-to learn more, please go to the website listed above! :)

1. Be prepared
2. Ready your bathing station
3. Start the suds
4. Dry

Enjoy! But, as a heads up, it also states on the site that it's not exactly necessary to bathe a cat, so don't feel like you have too! Thanks :)

Have a fabulous rest of the weekend!

Lizzie

Lizzie was adopted today by Vicki Ziegler and her husband! Her husband gave it to her as a gift for their Wedding Anniversary.
Lizzie will be living with former VHS Cat Nahla!

Bobby Update!

Here are two lovely Bobby updates from his new home. These were sent to me by Natalie!

"Fiver is crazy, but doing very well. He’s chowing down like a pro, racing all over the house and investigating everything. Haven’t let him and Chubs together without supervision but when they have hung out it has gone really well, better than I could have imagined. He just gives her a wide berth unless something really interesting gets his attention…then if he gets too close she gives him just a bit of a hiss and puts a paw up. But no growling, stare downs, puffed tails or anything like that. He respects her authority! She is mildly interested in, and she’ll watch him and go over to sniff him sometimes but mostly just ignores him.

He is so active, I forgot what its like to have a young’un in the house. He climbs the whole scratching post without using the steps, just scaling the post with his claws. Runs himself silly up and down and up and down the hallway, and he has started mewing more. He cracks us up. Very cute, and seems to have adjusted really well. There is only one negative thing I can say about him…he has the smelliest poops of any cat I’ve ever known!! I bought a few rolls of those little doggie poop bags you get for walking your dog because I have to scoop the box instantly as soon as he goes. It never dissipates; it stays as strong as when it was laid down for hours! How can such a smell come out of such a small sweet cat?

We are starting to try and teach him the ways of the household, like evening TV watching lap time and morning cuddle time…he is so busy all the time that he doesn’t really get around to the laying down cuddling thing too well yet but we’re working on him. He just has so much to see when we let him out of his room that he can hardly contain himself!"

Here is the second one:
"No, thanks those are such great pictures! He is tough to take pictures of since he’s all black and never sits still for one second J Oh, by the way – I weighed him today and he is 5 pounds FIVE ounces. Truly a “Fiver” now. Can you believe that? He’s gained 4 ounces since he left you guys. Fat bellied cat!!!

A hui hou,
Jenine

Everybody here is now so happy for you Fiver!
